My 7yo son likes to read history and the books he picks out to read are 5th/6th grade reading level. As he reads, I may need to help him read some words, but I stop every so often and we discuss what is happening so that he understands what he is reading.

Alway look in the eyes of your child when he or she is talking to you. You will have better understanding of their feelings.
